What’s on this Weekend

Christmas at Charles Dickens Museum, Holborn – until 24 December

The Charles Dickens Museum has an obvious right to go fully festive come December, and this year they’ll be marking the season with near-daily special events and an exhibition themed around ‘A Christmas Carol’. The house will be decorated especially for the season and guests can book for costumed tours (Dec 12 and 19) and candlelit evening visits (Dec 16, 23 and 30). Performances and readings of ‘A Christmas Carol’ are also available to book, and a costumed Christmas walk through London will take place on Dec 23. The museum’s annual Christmas Eve event offers carol singing, theatrical performances, Christmas pudding-making, readings and lots of mulled cider. Booking is recommended.

Royal College of Arts Christmas Fete, Knightsbridge – Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December

The Royal College of Art’s students’ union present their indoor Christmas market selling work by current and former students across all disciplines. Shop for unique ceramics, textiles, print, jewellery and art at affordable prices (starting at just £2). Festive food and drink will be on offer and the Sunday will feature family-friendly activities, with buggies, scooters etc. all welcome.

Christmas Market at Tate Modern, South Bank – on until 23 December

Pretty wooden chalets will fill the space between the Tate Modern and the Thames once more in 2015 for this traditional Christmas market. Browse handmade wooden toys, unique jewellery, intricate decorations and plenty more, then tuck into bratwurst, crêpes, roasted nuts or a warming cup of glühwein. A carousel and festive music help add to the Christmas spirit.

Photofusion Salon/15 Exhibition (17A Electric Lane, Brixton, SW9 8LA)Launch Party 9 December 18:30-21:00 Exhibition 10 December to 29 January 2016 Photofusion SALON is a gallery highlight in Photofusion’s calendar, showcasing an impressive range and quality of work produced by Members throughout the year. Exhibited salon-style, the photographic and video work of 100 artists will be installed in the gallery from floor to ceiling. Photofusion’s Membership Scheme was established when the organisation moved to the vibrant heart of Brixton in 1991. Each year, since 2010, submissions have been invited from Members to showcase the breadth and talent of the practicing photographic artists that go through their doors. There are no specified categories or themes; the aim of Photofusion SALON is simply to exhibit individual images that are powerful enough to stand alone in representation of a captivating story or concept. This year, submissions have included a broad range of genres and techniques from digital, analogue and experimental practices. Of particular note were a large number of entries addressing highly topical issues: from photo reportage on the local regeneration of Brixton, to wider environmental issues and the current refugee crisis. Photofusion SALON/15 highlights how important and impactful photography and visual lens media can be within society and culture.
